went out to the abandoned alameda naval air station today and shot a few rolls with a new camera i just picked up for a whopping 40 bucks (read: good deal) – an olympus xa rangefinder. i already had the xa2 but that’s zone focus and auto-aperture – this one gives much more control, and obviously much better results.

this place is pretty surreal at parts – the whole time i was there i kept thinking of what life was like there in the 40′s and 50′s – the same barracks that now are falling down and boarded up teeming with soldiers, and the housing (where the red car is) full of military families, kids riding bikes in the street all leave it to beaver style. now those small, homogeneous houses are filled with low-income families. in one of the airplane hangers there’s a community bike shop, and in another there’s an auction house.

i got to know the rent a cop at the nas pretty well while i was shooting these – he got increasingly less friendly every time he talked to me… something or other about not allowed to take pictures there or something and something else about federal felonies. i don’t know what he was talking about so i just kept being real friendly-like to him.

good day.
