I was thinking of doing the same thing for the Instagrambient comp. But couldn’t quite get my Tascam cassette 4 track to behave properly. Wound up just re-recording sounds for the dirt.

en passant capture. far left bottom white pawn captures the black pawn on the diagonal, to the empty space. because black had just moved it up two spaces, bad mistake. I’ve won a few games this way to opponents who didn’t know about the pawn’s en passant behavior. first time i used it against my wife, she called it cheatin’ and made me take it back. :)

wow, this is pretty. dunno how you managed to get those really high harmonic open chords, fading in/out, with the other string/trumpet-like high and low drones. this is pretty ethereal; nicely done. this is the sorta thing that would make for a captivating live performance vid, to see the kind of musicianship that goes into creating all these subtle intricacies.

hey, Tom. you’re right, my pedal is designed as a compliment to the ehx controller pedal, not a replacement so-to-speak. and to answer your question, yes, you can absolutely do that… the graphic interface (which i’m in the process of coding right now) will allow you to define functions as you see fit and then upload them to the pedal over usb for use later with your 2880 or other midi device. so you can set up the 12 switches to do exactly what you want them to do, and then save that patch. thanks for your interest. i’ll keep you posted to my progress.

I stumbled on your post and this looks amazing. I’ve been using the 2880 for a while now and getting fed up with some of it’s limitations. This looks really promising. I have the ehx footswitch and this blows that out of the water. From your layout, it looks like this is more of a compliment to the normal footswitch. Could you add in the option to solo all tracks but one? I’d like a way for me to switch between verse and chorus of a song and have the drum on track 1 still play while I record the chorus loop on track 2 or just play the chorus over the drum loop. yep. that’s idea, having some problems with serial baud rates right now… the arduino rxtx library doesn’t intrinsically support 31250 (midi) so it’s a little bit of a problem i’ll have to figure out, but i’ll get there.

thanks buddy. no, i actually didn’t edit the field recording of the ocean at all. the only effect on it is a multi-band compressor in ableton, with a little automation at louder parts to keep the low-end in check.

what a photo. It’s a beautiful image with the whitewater crashing at the top. Very pretty music as well. I’m surprised at how peaceful the contact mic material is. I imagine you cut out some of the louder waves?

That’s the mod I was thinking of doing. A kill switch toggle on the erase head…. But a colleague, who is an electrical engineer, suggested that I wire a resistor with a toggle, instead. That way the total current draw stays the same and no components are overloaded (or underloaded)…. He said that this would probably be better for the audio path.

Nice work….Have you modded your Yamaha 4 track? Did you disable the erase head?

I’ve been playing around a bit with making tape loops and that splicing bit is tricky! I haven’t yet tried looping on my Tascam 424

thanks! it was difficult to decide on the blend of effected track/dry track. in the end just used this subtle, panning lfo heard on this one, and i think it turned out as desired.

sure thing. here’s all i know: within illustrator (or corel, i assume) choose print & then separate by cmyk, so you should have four different images for printing, burn them to screens (read more on screen printing if that is confusing), and then either use actual cmyk process colors or, as i did with this run, use a custom pallet of your own choosing. that’s it.

yeah, i’ve played in E before, just never composed a whole track (even in an improvisational state as this one is) in it.

& yeah, it was a violin bow and a volume pedal with the guitar running through a grain delay / bitcrusher rack i built in ableton. thanks for the add on soundcloud!

first time in E, eh? i notice that a lot of the stuff i do tends to gravitate toward E/Dmaj, or Aflat, when i’m not paying attention to keys, just looking for sounds and mechanics.

anyway, your thing is ridiculously peaceful. it starts out nice and intimate, with just the rhodes, and then it reveals more and more audio treats, as sounds are layered later in the piece. “bowed guitar” — like with a violin bow, or an e-bow? either way, it makes things pretty. i added it to my favorites on soundcloud.

thanks dude. yeah, these are all done directly in illustrator with my wacom. for all of these i use the uniform weight brush (no tapper at the ends, or bulges in the middle), at a 0.005pt weight setting… super tiny. lots of scribbling :-)

hey, thanks! you’re right on. it’s field recordings running from tape on the tascam through the loop pedal & then the loop is being processed through the rds 1900 delay unit. the tascam does really great things to field samples when you muss around with the playback speed control. i love it.

yeah, exactly. it’s a really good techniques for natural reverbs too. record something in a dry environment and then put a speaker (doesn’t have to be an amplifier specifically) in a bathroom with a microphone and re-record the output. sm57 should be fine. that’s mostly what i use.

thanks man. i don’t feel like i’m very good at sequencing either… i think it just takes patience really though. as far as sound goes though, reamping is key for a it not to sound ‘electroniky.’ the acoustic drums on this were from an album leaf song and then i sliced them up and laid them out in a drum rack before reamping them through the sunn cabinet. really helps, you should try it.

I love your drum sound man. Wish I could get a grip on beats in my own music. Most of the time my own beats come out too electronicky because I usually use beat repeat and other plugins to fill in for my lack of sequencing skills.

looks as if someone accidentally fell off a ladder and a bucket of spackle landed on serene landscape painting. i know that is exactly what you were going for. also, the textures are nice. i Like the method however the end result is like a rough lift-off that nearly makes one wish to purge. it is the light carpenter’s wood glue type colour over the nice forest-like hues that kinda ruins it for me. even if i was to erase preconceptions of what i thought this should look like from reading only a description…i would still only hang it on the wall of the staircase that leads down into my cellar. it’s like art you might find in a big-city dentist office waiting room hanging above a chesterfield sofa with outdated magazines casually resting on one arm. it’s good that when you are sitting here in this room that it is behind you afterall, but it still stirs up a creepy lovecraftian feeling that makes you need to check to see if it hasn’t moved slightly closer to you since you walked into the room. i bet if i rubbed this it would cut me. it’s like the Christine of paintings and i do not wish to be left alone with it. i’ll go turn on some lamps now before i browse your works further. points for creativity/method

amazing how the saturated graininess that occurs when over-sharpening an image can be used for nice effect. the only thing is that i hate when it distorts and even breaks nice vector lines. but this is quite nice because of the multi-directional mosquito netting pattern of the grid overlay laid over soft desaturated hues

the mamiya i have (msx-500) is just a 35mm slr. it’s a little old and rickety and it leaks light and does some weird random stuff to photos. the red light spill just happened. not sure how, or why, but i love it.

Whoa. I’m tripping out to this sound. I’m still trying to figure out what I’m listening to. It’s really spiritual. This would make a great soundtrack for film. Sounds like Baraka.

Sounds awesome but I’m interested mostly in your photos. I love the film grain in these and the red spill one with the dog. I’ve never used Mamiya. Is the film instant or does it have to be developed? How did you achieve the red spill?

not weird at all (to me anyway… if that’s any standard to hold ‘weird’ up to.. ?) i know exactly what you mean. telling a story or creating a true atmosphere with music without appropriate field recordings wouldn’t work (as far as i’m concerned). it’d be like making a movie with no foley.

thanks! i had to look back at the raw image file to see if i added grain or not… i did not add any grain, just converted them to b/w and increased the clarity control in the camera raw dialog box. i think that old pentax macro lens is just really grainy in-and-of-itself.

Holy Shit! This is such a good idea! Sounds amazing as well. Goes from sounding like the crackle and pop of vinyl to sounding like an alien from District 9. Beautiful natural variety.

I love this. I love the way field recordings work with music. It feels as though your listening to a memory. Is that weird? It feels more personal when you can hear objects or events that you recognize, like footsteps, or birds or the ocean. You’ve definitely complemented the recording with some beautiful sounds.
